Artist Bio

Sheryl Legier Gruenig

Raised on the bayous of French Acadiana, Sheryl’s artistic journey started under the tutelage of a prominent Louisiana art educator and artist.  Rooted in her grandparents farmlands the landscapes instilled a deep appreciation for nature which she translates in her botanical art. Drawing on her expertise as an interior designer and her passion for art, she honors the legacy of Anna Atkins, the 19th century botanist who pioneered the sun printing process to create the first illustrated book using Cyanotype. Sheryl describes Cyanotype as a unique and somewhat unpredictable process that captures the shadows of botanicals and other objects.

Spending time in nature collecting natural and living plant material to be used in the work, Sheryl endeavors to capture epheremal moments in time. The hope is that the viewer can connect with nature and experience a moment of serenity and joy in the midst of everyday life and the challenges it brings to us all.   In addition to Cyanotype, she works with many types of mixed media, collage and encaustic. Some of her work fuses the mediums creating unique works.  She only creates original work and never reproductions. Discovery and experimentation with processes and materials bring interest and excitement to her artwork.
